Cyber Hygiene is Essential to Fighting Ransomware According to Tidal Cyber and GCA Analysis

  • October 17, 2023

WASHINGTON DC, October 17, 2023—According to an analysis conducted by Tidal Cyber and the Global Cyber Alliance (GCA), the implementation of fundamental cybersecurity practices can greatly enhance the ransomware defense capabilities of small businesses.

This recent research reveals that the cyber hygiene measures outlined in the GCA Cybersecurity Toolkit for Small Businesses effectively address "up to 86% of the [ransomware] techniques that enable initial network access or that compromise the confidentiality, integrity, or availability of data." Furthermore, by adopting the basic cyber hygiene steps recommended in the GCA toolkit, small businesses can effectively counter 72% of the most commonly encountered ransomware techniques. You can find more information in the report titled "Defensive Measures Against Ransomware (2023)."

To put it differently, the adoption of fundamental cyber hygiene measures, made accessible through free tools, resources, and practical recommendations tailored for small organizations, significantly enhances the confidence level in defending against the most pertinent ransomware attack methods. Using Tidal Cyber's "Confidence Scores," which gauge the ability to mitigate an attack, it was observed that the average small business possessed a Confidence Score of 23 out of 50 when in an "unprotected" state, meaning no defensive measures were in place. However, after the implementation of the GCA toolkit's measures, this score notably increased by 16 points, reaching 39 out of 50.
